Withdraw out of the picture Ireland and the influences that emanated from it and it is safe to say that the history of what are now called the British Isles between the departure of the Roman and the arrival of the Norman would be represented by a blank almost as complete as the vacuum registered between the arrival of the English in what is now England and the arrival of Augustine and Aidan.
