About the Author:
The author founded 'Women in the Wind' Motorcycle club of Great Britain in the early 1980's. She now lives in Arizona with her dogs.
Review:
Crack! A steel toe motorcycle boot struck her lower back as she lay on the barroom floor. She tried to roll into a ball. Crack. Crack. Crack. Boots kicked her back. Her spleen ruptured. Her kidneys bruised. Her ribs cracked. She rolled to the left. In slow motion, a black boot swung directly toward her eye. Pims turned away. Crack! When I was given Girl on a Motorbike by Helena Mims to review, I thought it was going to be another story about a girl who rode pillion until she decided to get her own bike. Boy, was I surprised. The first paragraph begins with hard-hitting action, literally, and I could immediately tell Mims was a skilled writer. With vivid descriptions of a chain of dramatic events, the opening chapter had me hooked. The theme involves a young, ostensibly hot girl named Pims who wants to fit in with bikers and the lifestyle. She naively puts herself in dan-gerous situations, gets involved with highly questionable characters, and changes her appearance to fit the biker chick profile. Girl on a Motorbike would be a great primer for any woman intrigued by the glamour of fast bikes and the men who ride them. Replete with pitfalls and danger, the book shouts What you don t know can hurt you. You ll watch Pims attend her first rallies, and learn about bikes, colors, and codes. One thing I found intriguing was that I couldn t tell if the author was poking fun at wannabes, or if she knew what it felt like to want to belong in the culture. Probably both. Mims shows with vivid detail and brutally honest internal dialogue how desperately Pims wants to be seen as a real rider. Ultimately, Girl on a Motorbike weeds out the superficial and gets to a golden nugget of truth: Some people ride to belong, but lucky are those who ride to ride. Even luckier are the women who have the guts to do it, too. --East Coast Biker Online
