Four score and seven years ago...
So begins one of the most important speeches in the history of the United States -- Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Given on a cold November day, it wasn't much of a speech, really -- just a few remarks. Not meant to be remembered.
But these few remarks have been remembered. Why? What was the true meaning behind them? Where did they come from? Why is it so important that we never forget what President Lincoln said on that cold November day?

From Booklist:
Gr. 2-5. This paperback from the Milestone Books series provides a lively introduction to the Gettysburg Address. Armstrong first lays the groundwork by discussing rebellion--the colonists' rebellion against British authority--then, the young nation's struggle to reconcile its ideal of liberty with the reality of slavery, and the increasing divisiveness of that issue during the years between the Revolution and the Civil War. A section on the life of Abraham Lincoln and the progress of the war leads into Lincoln's traveling to Pennsylvania and delivering the Gettysburg Address. A postscript presents and discusses the earliest version of the speech from an extant copy. The book ends with a bibliography of sources and a list of recommended Web sites. Sometimes colloquial in tone, Armstrong's account is also quite informative and eminently readable. With short chapters, relatively large type, and many effective black-and-white illustrations, this is inviting. Carolyn Phelan
