The awe and wonder of seeing a wild animal in familiar surroundings and the challenge of conquering the qualms of facing a new and potentially frightening situation are well handled. Pastel watercolors portray a comfortably rumpled little Sonia, a sleek and smiling Barnie, and a lazy suburban setting. If Barnie and the fox border on the anthropomorphic, they do so in a way that an imaginative child would easily understand. In a pleasantly coincidental ending Sonia, flush with the extraordinary event and her own courage, is rewarded in the morning with the cereal box prize--a toy fox.
