The Pike River Phantom is a fast-paced, entertaining, and mildly scary story. The characters are believable and sympathetic, especially Charlie and his slightly arrogant yet courageous cousin Rachel. A subplot concerning Charlie's learning not to be ashamed of his ex-convict father is a little pat, but does not interfere with the main action of the story.
