A chapter on whale hunting traces the practice from its small beginnings to today's massive, almost deadly conclusion, and the author minces no words on the doubtful survival of the blue, bowhead, and humpback whales. She ends on a hopeful note with the recounting of the cooperative world-wide effort to save the three gray whales trapped in the Alaskan ice in 1988. Folkens's drawings and diagrams illustrate aspects of whale anatomy and physiology and show the differences between the great whales' appearances; the good-quality, full-color photos are also attractive and informative.
