From Booklist:
Gr. 2-3. Eli is so fascinated by dinosaurs that he becomes very knowledgeable about them and adopts a model stegosaurus as his constant companion. He even becomes convinced that an egg-shaped rock he finds in the yard is a dinosaur egg and will hatch in a box he places near a radiator. His older brother and a friend, Roberta, substitute eggshells for the rock and place a green lizard in the box. Eli is delighted with the bogus baby dinosaur, and by the time he realizes that his new pet is only a lizard, he has transferred his fascination with dinosaurs to a love affair with lizards. Hooks writes on a subject of interest to many early readers, and he separates the episodes into chapters. Meisel's exuberant illustrations are well integrated with the text and enliven every page. This addition to the Bank Street Ready-to-Read series should attract many primary-age readers. Sheilamae O'Hara
From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-3-Five-year-old Eli, a.k.a. Mr. Dinosaur, has dug up a rock in his backyard that he is sure is a dinosaur egg destined to hatch. His older brother, who narrates the story, and his friend easily trick the younger boy by replacing the rock with a lizard and some broken egg shells. Meisel's cartoon illustrations are colorful and humorous. Newly independent readers who are too old for "Barney" and had to beg to see Jurassic Park will certainly enjoy this book.
