About the Author:
"Wow, what a stormer! It's wonderful to have the voice of someone as young and as funny in the children's books world" Michael Rosen "Everyone's falling for Laura Dockrill" Vogue Named one of the top ten literary talents by The Times and one of the top twenty hot faces to watch by ELLE magazine, Laura is a young, talented writer/illustrator who is a graduate of the BRIT School of Performing Arts. She has performed her work at the Edinburgh Fringe, Camp Bestival, Latitude, Bookslam and the Soho Theatre and on each of the BBC's respective radio channels, 1-6. She has been a roaming reporter for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, run workshops at the Imagine Festival on the South Bank, and is on the advisory panel at the Ministry of Stories.
From School Library Journal:
Gr 4–8—Darcy notices things. "Have you ever noticed your noticing?" begins this fast-paced, humorous book, which Darcy points out is not for babies. Darcy wants to be a writer, and the loose plot is based on the accounts she writes of her experiences. Tangents include tales about a sworn enemy, her friends, her family, and a pet sheep that doesn't bleat. A surprise party, a Halloween get-together, and a plan to run away are fodder for her stories, and a chapter that describes Darcy's sister's dance audition is touching and moving. Darcy's distinctive perspective will appeal to those searching for fun and quirky protagonists. Dockrill as narrator is wickedly funny; however, some young listeners may have difficulty keeping up with the pace of the narration. British terminology is sprinkled throughout the novel ("spyholes," "knuckle of bread," "fried egg and chips"). VERDICT Older middle grade listeners may appreciate the strong female character, the dark humor, and the diarylike narrative.—Terri Perper, Olney Elementary School, MD
