Further savagely funny and deeply moving true life adventures from a comic genius.

To describe Open the Cage, Murphy as action-packed is a massive understatement. The book takes us on a roller coaster ride through a decade of Paul O'Grady's life and is stuffed to the gunwales with hilarious stories, extreme situations and outrageous one-liners. At the end of Paul's previous volume of autobiography, Still Standing, his brilliant comic creation Lily Savage stood on the brink of fame. Here, Lily embraces success as to the manner born, and world domination beckons!

Along the way, the stories come thick and fast. Paul is involved in a plane crash, gets caught up in the LA riots and has a close encounter with Madonna. He takes us with him to a gay-themed weekend in Butlin's in Skegness, on a rowdy tour with Prisoner Cell Block H -- the Musical and into the depths of the Australian rainforest, where he befriends a rare bird that can disembowel a man with a single kick. The dramatis personae include a family of dolphins, Charlton Heston and the ghost of Joan of Arc -- and there's a starring role for a certain remarkable dog, Buster Elvis Savage.

But whether he's writing about star-studded Hollywood parties, the devastating loss of close friends to AIDS, or late night shenanigans at the end of Blackpool Pier, Paul's wit and humanity never desert him.

Open the Cage, Murphy is a genuine delight -- all the more so for being delightfully genuine.

About the Author:
PAUL O'GRADY first came to fame in the guise of Lily Savage, and was nominated for a Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival in 1991. Lily later became a regular on This Morning, took over the bed on The Big Breakfast and presented Blankety Blank, but has now retired. Paul, of course, went on to further success presenting the Paul O'Grady Show on Channel 4. His previous books, At My Mother's Knee, The Devil Rides Out and Still Standing were all Sunday Times bestsellers. Paul has won numerous awards including a BAFTA for Best Entertainment Performance, National Television Awards for Most Popular Daytime Programme and Most Popular Entertainment Show, and a Comedy Award for Best Comedy Entertainment Personality. His show about Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, Paul O'Grady: For the Love of Dogs, has won two National Television Awards for Best Factual Entertainment and also received a BAFTA nomination.
Review:
"Top pick of this year's celeb memoirs" * Daily Mail * "Uproarious... There's a degree of candour and artistry to O'Grady's writing that lifts it far above the usual showbiz memoir" * Guardian * "With typical razor-sharp wit and candour, Paul tells of his rise to fame as Lily Savage in the late 1980s and early 1990s, before he became a household name... Riveting" * Mirror * "Whether writing about star-studded Hollywood parties, the devastating loss of close friends to Aids or his late night shenanigans, O'Grady's wit has never deserted him" * Liverpool Echo *
