Polo isn't so sure, and he is even less confident when he notices that all the other students' bears are brown. But soon he and Pete are building towers, sailing boats in the water table, and playing dress up. Polo really perks up after feeding the goldfish in the pet corner and has "a lovely time" with the other stuffed bears when the children go out for recess. Youngsters going to school for the first time will be reassured by Pete and Polo's positive experience and will benefit from seeing a typical school day unfold through Reynold's cheerful text and bright watercolors depicting a friendly, bustling classroom. PreSchool-Grade 1-Youngsters will find comfort in this first-day-of-school adventure and will relate to Pete's enthusiasm and Polo's trepidation. The pint-sized pupil and his stuffed polar bear take part in painting, blocks, dress-up, storytime, snack, and outdoor play. However, much emphasis is placed on the fact that Polo is white and all of Pete's classmates' bears are brown. After recess, though, the boy is relieved to be able to spot his special bear among the others when he reenters the room, and his friend assures him, "I had a lovely time with all the other bears." The flat, brightly colored illustrations are reminiscent of the popular TV cartoon series Doug. This bland little tale with a mere couple of lines of text per page is an additional selection for back to school.
