PreSchool-Grade 1?Leon is a happy pig until he falls in love with Albertine, a hen. Suddenly, his life becomes a series of attempts to gain the attention of "the wonderful chicken." He tries singing like the rooster, dancing like the rabbit, being strong like the bull, and other antics, all to attract the attention of his beloved. Unfortunately, Albertine is quite indifferent, seldom noticing that the suitor is even present. Leon finally gives up and plays with a friend in the mud. The two pigs have such a wonderful time that all of the farm animals soon join in the mud party?including Albertine who, at last, sees Leon and proclaims, "I've had so much fun with you! I'd love to do it all over again." Joyfully, Leon whispers, "I love you, Albertine," and the muddy duo dance away on the last page. Plenty of white space focuses attention on the charming, humorous watercolor illustrations. Davenier's judicious use of line, color, and word perfectly conveys the poor pig's frustrated efforts to impress the uninterested chicken. Like that of Rosemary Wells, Davenier's art evokes more emotion than seems possible.
