Grade 3-5 Viewing a country through the lens of a single family may make sense for a relatively compact and homogeneous society like that of Iceland, but it provides little insight into the complexity of sprawling, diverse populations like those of China and the Soviet Union. Each of these books provides some interesting information about its country, and each is illustrated with attractive, informative color photographs. The information however, is too brief, particularly for China and the U.S.S.R., about which there is no dearth of information in children's collections. Because the Chinese and Soviet families embrace uncritically the official values of their governments, the books could spark a discussion of societal value structures; but the basic information on family life is presented in a format which will make it difficult for children to extract material for school assignments.
