Successive chapters examine the 19th-century roots of conflict in the Middle East and the Arab-Israeli wars, the Iran-Iraq war, and finally, in greater detail, the 1990-91 crisis involving Iraq and Kuwait. The book concludes by noting that since the underlying problems of the area remain unresolved--questions centering on religion, territory, politics and oil--prospects for peace are not bright. The design and format of this series make for easy accessibility. Each chapter begins with a highlighted sentence or two that summarizes its contents. The print is large and easy to read; there are plenty of well-designed maps and diagrams. Pages abound with black-and-white and full-color photographs, all of which have informative captions. The last seven pages contain ready reference information not mentioned in the text: a descriptive listing of Middle Eastern countries, a rundown on weapons, a chronology, etc. A balanced, objective framework from which to begin viewing the region and its problems. --Ellen D.
