Grade 2-5-- An unsuccessful attempt to explain the drug problem to children. Beginning with a comparison between wanting drugs and wanting candy, Hemming gives a brief description of what drugs are, how they work in the body, and why people take them. Pictured are kids sniffing glue along with a description of how to do it. Crack, a major problem in some elementary schools, is not mentioned anywhere in the book. According to Hemming, "People have to want to stop taking drugs. . . .the first step is to make sure they get lots of rest, food and help, . . . . They may feel sick for a while." She doesn't explain what addiction is or the changes that it makes in the body, or indicate how difficult it is to cure. The format of the book looks like an easy reader with big print, but the reading level is about fourth or fifth grade. There is a need for drug information for this audience, but wait for a better book to come along. --Martha Gordon, South Salem Library, N.Y.
