Grade 6 Up-These titles are unlikely to attract readers to their respective fields. The writing is often dry and rather technical, and not all of the terms are in the glossary. The black-and-white photographs tend to be murky, though better in Geologist than in Meteorologist; the ink sketches and diagrams are more understandable. For basic layout, Geologist is superior: lists are in uniform, open print, which is not so in Meteorologist, where materials may be listed, but instructions for the experiments are given in hard-to-follow paragraphs that will require more than one reading. Each book has essential topic information, but neither has the appeal and easy-to-follow directions of John Farndon's How the Earth Works (Reader's Digest, 1992). Liberal use of color and photographs lure readers into that book, and inform them once they're inside.
