Gr 4-7-After reading this biography, the seventh secretary-general of the United Nations remains a somewhat elusive figure. Tessitore's concluding note apologizes for the scarcity of information regarding Annan's personal life and explains that this results from both a general lack of interest in Annan (until recently) and his refusal to be interviewed. The author presents skeletal facts such as his subject's birthplace, education, marriages, and jobs. The pace picks up a bit once Annan begins his political career as he successfully negotiates tenable situations in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The book's strength lies in its account of U.N. dealings and its influence on international affairs. Generally, the illustrations are lackluster. One in particular shows three unidentified people crossing a street and the caption reads, "Kofi Annan attended graduate school in Geneva-." This brief biography will not generate much interest in this public figure.-Laura Glaser, Euless Junior High School, TX
