From School Library Journal:
Grade 9 Up Current changes in China are surveyed here through 1984. Following a brief history through Communism under Mao Tse-tung, the "New China" under Deng Xiaoping is described. The book's usefulness lies primarily in its description of China's current economic system and how that system differs from past efforts. Also the analysis of China's place in the political world , with its leanings away from the U.S.S.R. and toward the U.S., while maintaining a unique foreign policy, is helpful. However, Hacker assumes that readers have considerable knowledge of current world affairs. Generalizations are made, often without enough explanation for the uninformed, such as the statement: "And in February 1972, President Nixon made his historic journey." This is not the book to give students who want a description of the social lives and culture of China. Young adults wishing that emphasis need to turn to Perl's Red Star and Green Dragon (Morrow, 1983; o.p.). For a greater analysis of China under Mao, Lawson's The Long March (Crowell, 1983) is helpful. Hacker's book fills a need for current economic/political analysis. There are several appropriately placed black-and-white photographs and a survey of adult books and magazines for further reading. A current, if somewhat challenging, addition to high-school and public libraries. Sandra L. Miller, Morgantown Public Library, W.Va.
