PreSchool-Grade 2-- In this wordless adventure, a rabbit is pursued by a fox; then both are chased by a wolf. The wolf overtakes the fox, and in a confusing sequence leaves him behind. Wolf then confronts the rabbit with teeth bared, but the rabbit bravely stands his ground, and the two become unlikely friends. Sara uses collage as she did in Across Town (Orchard Bks., 1991), and she again relies primarily on dramatic shapes, but with crisper edges and more color. The tree trunks are a deep salmon pink against a textured gray background; bright yellow sunlight gleams as the animals emerge from the forest. Shapes are distorted and a bit menacing, and may frighten younger readers.
