Grade 6-9-- Much ado about very little. Huey Blendenbacher's senior year is not exactly what he'd fantasized about all his life. He's got two girlfriends--Megan and Molly--and neither knows about his two-timing. He's involved in an offbeat volunteer effort that has resulted in having to make early morning excursions to a reservoir to protect wild herons from a gun-crazy poacher. Because of these distractions, Huey is failing English, and every effort he makes to remedy this situation only gets him into hotter water. Everything unravels when the expected happens: the two girls discover their boyfriend's shared love interest. But all ends happily when Huey makes up with Molly, Megan becomes interested in his best friend, and he helps capture the hunter in the act of his crime. Then, of course, he can turn his attention to passing English. "Huey B" is a believable and innocent schemer whose ability to get into self-made, well-intentioned trouble is oddly appealing, but predictable. Young readers interrupting their own education to read this might identify with Huey and enjoy the occasional humor in the story, but they'll probably find the interlude less than exciting. --Jack Forman, Mesa College Library, San Diego
