Gr. 1-2. This companion to Chicago and the Cat (1993) and Chicago and the Cat: The Camping Trip (1994) finds Chicago the rabbit and her feline buddy preparing to attend a Halloween party. Chicago selects a horse costume, and the two work hard learning to maneuver in the outfit. Once the cat learns there will be a costume contest, however, he has second thoughts about their choice of attire. When the equine pair finally sets off for the party, the two decide to trick-or-treat along the way, only to arrive too late for the contest. Short chapters, large print, and half-pages of text help to create an attractive layout for this easy-to-read story. The full-color illustrations add humor and bring out the many childlike qualities of the characters. A holiday offering sure to please beginning readers. Kay Weisman

Grade 1-2-Another "Chicago and the Cat" story, characterized by sly humor and the wary relationship between Chicago the rabbit and her exasperating feline friend. This time, Chicago's plan for them to wear a horse costume to the Halloween party does not meet with the cat's approval, leading to mild mayhem. Koontz's cartoon illustrations are pleasant but unmemorable; the text is gently amusing. Although not an outstanding choice, beginning readers will enjoy the two friends' antics.
