PreSchool-In this cumulative farmyard tale, a scruffy black dog barks at the full moon. His enthusiastic nighttime crooning proves to be contagious, and he is joined by a mooing cow, a cooing dove, and other melodious animals. The concert is brought to an abrupt end when the rooster sings his "Cock-a-Doodle-Doo" to signal the approach of morning. The simple text builds to a satisfying conclusion. However, the repetitive rhythm and sometimes stilted rhyme become monotonous. The watercolor illustrations are vibrant and lively; the creatures' rounded lines and animated features are a little cartoonish, but friendly and appealing. The deep, purple-blue of the night sky and the greens and yellows of the fields form a colorful background. The repetitive animal noises and brightly colored drawings will appeal to younger listeners. However, Melissa Sweet's Fiddle-I-Fee (Little, 1992), with its buoyant text and delightful pictures, is a better choice for a musical trip down on the farm.
