Kindergarten-Grade 3–"The restaurants that grown-ups like are pretty boring. They serve only boring food, like steak and spaghetti." So begins this madcap book that's packed with kid appeal. The first scene shows a small figure leaning his head on the table as the overly large, grotesque adults stuff themselves. He then fantasizes about the Super Sailing Sea Restaurant, an eatery that is every child's dream. The only way to get there is to wait on the beach for a "tiny tin tub," in which lucky young patrons head off with Chef Peppi on a sea-and-food adventure filled with things like Jolly Jumping Socks, a chocolate castle, and Jell-O fish that taste like each person's favorite food. The Spotted Sea Singers provide a glorious grand finale before the passengers head ashore. As the book ends, the child is still at the boring restaurant but he's eating a colorful meal surrounded by his sea-animal friends. The wacky illustrations–which look as though the spirits of Quentin Blake, Babette Cole, and Henrik Drescher were channeled into them–reflect the colors of the sand, sea foam, and warm waters of Australia. Some readers may find a couple of scantily clad, overweight adults in the beach scenes a bit much. Other than that, this frothy, exuberant tale will appeal to children who hate to eat out.
