For the person trying to protect essential savings, this book has it all. The traditional "safe havens" for such investments have been accounts in financial institutions, money market funds, and insurance policies or annuities. Recent events have called all of these into question and while Updegrave, an associate editor of Money magazine, agrees that there is cause for concern, he explains tests potential investors can use to evaluate the safety of individual institutions in each group. The exception is insurance companies, for which he urges use of commercial rating services. (Purchase of the book will be justified for even the smallest libraries if only for the explanation of these ratings and telephone numbers through which consumers can obtain them.) Each section contains lists of the "safest" institutions. Safe investments are covered in many personal finance books, but the evaluation tools described here fill a need of patrons at all public libraries.
