Books to Give ~ Books to Love®
(Alexandria, VA, U.S.A.)

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Mostly known for low-budget Westerns and serials, Republic Pictures, active from 1935-1959, also made a lesser number of higher quality films. Written years after the studio's closing, this book recounts the Republic story by highlighting its films' leading ladies, including Barbara Stanwyck, Maureen O'Hara, Ethel Barrymore, and Rita Hayworth. As Thomas Burnett Swan writes in the introduction, "The Heroine or the Horse is a tribute to some of the finest actresses and greatest beauties of Hollywood; it is also, I hope, a partial but accurate history of the studio where they worked." The book features 130 black and white photos of the actresses and stills from the movies. A wonderful gift book for old movie buffs and fans of the golden age of Hollywood. Seller Inventory # 275

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Photographs (illustrator). 1st Edition. Republic Studios was more than serials and Saturday westerns. True, the low-budget westerns and serials, often themselves westerns, dominated production in the studio's early days, and they billed the hero above the heroine and, as often as not, co-starred him with his horse. It is true that John Wayne was Republic's greatest star, and that President Yates engaged, from time to time, such famous actors as Robert Mitchum, Orson Welles, and James Mason. It is also true, however, that he engaged Joan Crawford, Dorothy McGuire, Barbara Stanwyck, Susan Hayward, Maureen O'Hara, Myrna Loy, Ethel Barrymore, Judith Anderson, Ann Miller, Yvonne DeCarlo, and other actresses, lesser of fame but hardly less gifted, and that he had under contract Ann Rutherford, Jennifer Jones, Rita Hayworth, and Carol Landis in the days before they were stars. The ladies who worked for Republic were as countless as the bullets fired in a typical Saturday western. This book is limited to leading ladies, not supporting players, but even they are so numerous that each is treated in a separate chapter or an entry within a chapter, arranged chronologically according to the date of the first film each made for Republic. They are given space in proportion either to their importance to the studio or the quality of their work. There are more than 130 photographs of the ladies of Republic, including both 'starlet' and 'star' poses. The history of Republic, its rapid rise and its ultimate fall, is largely revealed in its use of its actresses. Such a revelation, far from excluding the men, joins them with the women in their importance to the studio, and, in fact, the most important figure, aside from Yates, man or woman, is John Wayne. The Heroine or the Horse is a tribute to some of the finest actresses and greatest beauties of Hollywood; it is also a partial but accurate history of the studio where they worked. It is an important addition to the literature of film history. Book. Seller Inventory # 000885
