To live through the years with the people of Shakespeare's plays is an experience we Johnsons yearn to extend to others. The essence of that experience is, we believe, adumbrated in the directing concepts around which the content of this book is centered. Our directing concepts, first written for the casts of the seven plays selected for discussion, were later shared with playgoers, many of whom have encouraged their publication. That encouragement has led to their expansion, in the hope of enriching the pleasure of play readers as well as playgoers, and with the more important hope that many who have neither read nor seen the plays of William Shakespeare will feel impelled to fill that cultural gap. It is not only directors, designers, actors, and students of drama and theatre arts that we address these pages. What we are saying may be of professional significance to them. To others, however, particularly playgoers, readers of plays, English teachers, and Shakespearephiles, the book may serve as passport to new vistas in familiar country.
