Was meine Bekanntschaft mit den Gedankenkreisen der älteren Medicin betrifft, so hatte ich dazu ausser der allgemeinen Veranlassung, welche für jeden gebildeten Arzt vorliegt, der die Litteratur seiner Wissenschaft und die Richtung, sowie die Bedingungen ihres Fortschreitens ver stehen will, noch eine besondere, da mir mit meiner ersten Professur in Königsberg vom Jahre 1849 - 1856 die Auf gabe zufiel in jedem Winter auch allgemeine Pathologie vorzutragen, d. H. Denjenigen Theil der Krankheitslehre, der die allgemeinen theoretischen Begriffe von der Natur der Krankheit und die Principien ihrer Behandlung ent halten sollte. Die allgemeine Pathologie war von den Aelteren gleichsam als die feinste Blüthe medicinischer Wissenschaftlichkeit angesehen worden. In der That aber hatte das, was früher ihren Inhalt gebildet, für den Jünger moderner Naturwissenschaft nur noch historisches Interesse.
