Excerpt from Letters to Isabel
One privilege to know intimately the source and inspiration of this beautiful book makes bold to assert that the family life of a man is his true life, where he is found at his best, though sometimes, alas, at his worst! It was in the far back days that I was first privileged to obtain a glimpse of a family life more beautiful and sacred than most.
One day in a grey old family house on the North side of Edinburgh I saw for the first time a solemn, round-faced sturdy child with large, wistful, grey eyes and an aureole of red-gold hair. The occasion was a meeting between her and another imp of mischief bearing my name, the result a broken doll, passion, tears, ultimate forgiveness, but little enthusiasm.
