The “Travels of Plymouth,” sequel to “Gem of the First Water”, is an epic adventure of cosmic proportions. Plymouth has returned to his normal teenage life, putting into practice the things he learned from his adventures in the Land of Confusion. Then, just when his life seems to be settling into a healthy routine, Radino gives him back his cloak and a deerskin pouch containing a mysterious pearl. This provides the catalyst for a new adventure for Plymouth and his young charge, Jimmy. Propelled into separate journeys, they must each make decisions that will not only affect the quality of their own lives but also have consequences for the Cosmos. We meet old friends and arch enemies and encounter new friendships and challenges as the journey progresses across time and space. Plymouth confronts the conflicts and dilemmas of mid-adolescence: love, sexuality, jealousy and pride, to name a few, and works through these and many more issues on his quest for maturity and identity. The Traveler accompanies him to Ashworth, a place beyond war, where he experiences a lifestyle that offers a blueprint for living. From there they travel to Nom de Plume where the adventure begins in earnest with Worm capturing the Traveler, and Plymouth meeting his first love. Plymouth’s mission to gather the pearls of cosmic wisdom and rescue Lumberg provides a very good read that is entertaining as well as educational.
