This text tells the story of cells as the unit of life in a colorful and student-friendly manner, taking an "essentials only" approach. By using the successful model of previously published Short Courses, this text succeeds in conveying the key points without overburdening readers with secondary information. The authors (all active researchers and educators) skillfully present concepts by illustrating them with clear diagrams and examples from current research. Special boxed sections focus on the importance of cell biology in medicine and industry today. This text is a completely revised, reorganized, and enhanced revision of From Genes to Cells.

From the Author:
Cell Biology, A Short Course aims to cover cell biology, from molecular genetics to cell signaling, in a form especially suitable for first year undergraduates. We have deliberately kept the book to a manageable size so that neither cost, content, or weight is too daunting for the students. Some competing texts have achieved a small size and internal simplicity by an oversimplification of terms and abstraction of concepts that renders the texts bland, poor reference sources, and poor bases for students intending to continue their studies in biology. In contrast `Cell Biology' uses the same nomenclature as advanced texts and research papers, and uses concrete scientific and medical examples throughout. Boxed material throughout the book is divided into examples to illustrate the topics covered in the main text, explanations of the medical relevance of the material, and in depth sections that extend the coverage beyond the content of the main text. Questions are provided at the end of each chapter to help the reader assess how well they have assimilated and understood the material.
From the Back Cover:
Taking an "essentials only" approach, Cell Biology: A Short Course, Second Edition, a complete revision and upgrading of the earlier textbook From Genes to Cells, tells the story of cells as the unit of life in a uniquely accessible, student-friendly manner. The authors combine their expertise in the areas of cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology to skillfully present key points and illustrate them with clear diagrams and numerous examples from current research.

In the tradition of other successful Short Course texts, this book offers students:

  • A unified presentation of cell biology in both medicine and industry with extensive cross-referencing
  • Copious illustrations that make course material clear and easy to understand
  • Numerous boxed inserts that tie concepts to real-world research and developments in medicine and industry
  • A detailed, complete description of intercellular signaling
  • A chapter devoted to discussing a case study of cystic fibrosis

Review questions with answers at the end of each chapter, plus a full glossary of key words and phrases, render even complex concepts accessible and easy to master, making Cell Biology: A Short Course, Second Edition the most integrated introduction to this fascinating and timely subject available today.
