Louis Galambos is professor of History and editor of the Dwight D. Eisenhower papers at Johns Hopkins University. Joseph Pratt is the NEH-Cullen Professor of History and Business at the University of Houston.

Historians Galambos and Pratt argue that any strategy to enhance U.S. competitiveness should build on our traditions rather than borrow from the Japanese or Germans. They maintain that U.S. business is most productive when its managers blend innovation, efficiency, and stability. The Great Depression resulted from too little attention to maintaining stable demand, while the stagflation of the 1970s stemmed from a lack of emphasis on efficiency.
