This is the story of Charles Black, a banknote counterfeiter, in which he reveals how he learnt his skills, and how the money was "laundered". At his trial in 1979, the police described his work as "the best ever produced". After serving two gaol sentences, he finally went straight - to run a pet shop and a Thai bride marriage agency. His story is full of Cockney humour and insight into the criminal world.

An apparent technological wiz, especially in the use of machine tools, British-born Black began counterfeiting traveler's checks--and then money--in the early 1970s. He took an artist's pride in his work, which mostly involved British and American currency, and received his supreme compliment when it was found that one of his techniques rendered a U.S. government detection device obsolete. As his reputation (and arrest record) grew, he connived constantly to stay one jump ahead of the police, not always successfully. But as told by Black and freelancer Horsnell, his story, filled with wry humor, will appeal mainly to prospective counterfeiters and fellow technocrats, so crammed is it with intricate details.

Englishman Black forged British pounds and American dollars so well, if he does say so himself, that he rendered obsolete a U.S. Treasury counterfeiting detecting machine. He was not as skillful, however, at avoiding arrest and imprisonment. This slim volume consists of the technical details of producing funny money as well as a sprinkling of a few personal anecdotes. Following his release from prison in 1982, Black opened a pet store and established a Thai bride agency in England. Now that might have made a fascinating tale. As it is, this is not a necessary purchase, especially for an American audience.
