What Lillian O'Donnell does so well here is what she has always done in her various series: she creates a recognizable lead character--New York private detective Gwen Ramadge--who gets to live the adventures we wish we had the time and courage to live. In this outing, Gwen is trying to nab a jewel thief on a cruise ship when the murder of a famous fashion designer takes precedence. Wit, craft and human values combine to give the book an afterlife.
