Gr. 1^-2. A familiar scenario for kids gets an almost realistic treatment here. The young narrator likes riding his bike despite the annoying training wheels that mark him as a novice. When asked to play at a faraway park, the boy refuses because he's afraid the other kids will laugh at his wheels. He finally decides to ride over with his training wheels and remove them at the park. When he replaces them on the way home, they unscrew (without his knowledge--yeah, right), and unaware, he rides home on two wheels. The scourge of training wheels will spark a response in most kids, who will enjoy the boy's success. The watercolor cartoons are pleasant and catch the humor. Ilene Cooper
