Review:
Some of the surprise of having a heroine who keeps her manic depression under control with medication while working for a public agency that protects children has gone in this fifth book in the series, but Abigail Padgett's Bo Bradley is still an original and fascinating character. When a 15-year-old in foster care is found in a catatonic state at a vampire-themed teenage hangout, Bo breaks the rules to befriend the child and digs up a sordid saga of abuse that reaches into her own agency. Past Padgetts available in paperback include Child of Silence, Moonbird Boy, Strawgirl, and Turtle Baby.
From Kirkus Reviews:
A troubled 15-year-old tricked out in gothic finery, complete with a porcelain doll named Kimmy chained to her wrist, collapses in a club called The Goblin Market at the same moment that the comatose twin sister whose memory she's long repressed except for her name--Kimmy--finally slips over the edge to death on the other side of town. It's obviously a case for Bo Bradley- -not only because she's the closest caseworker in San Diego's Child Protective Services to the Goblin Market, but because getting at the dark truth behind Janny Malcolm's tormented childhood will tax the intuitive side of Bo's manic-depression to the limit. Who was the intruder who broke into the house of Tamlin Lafferty, the twins' mother, 13 years ago and left Kimmy for dead? Was Tamlin herself abused by her dollmaker father, as her sister Beryl claims to have been? What secret has Tamlin been hiding behind the veil she's been wearing as cloistered Sister Martin since that night? Why is Mary Mandeer, the Malcolms' caseworker, still haunted by menacing dreams and visions? And what does Bo's boss, Madge Aldenhoven, know about the Malcolms that's boosted her normal irritability to toxic levels? Though the Malcolm malfeasance may seem a little too overemphatic and generously distributed, it's the real thing at last--and so is Bo's fifth case (Moonbird Boy, p. 337, etc.), which ratchets Padgett's imaginative grasp of evil, and the unrelenting tension it spawns, to dizzy new heights.
