As if William Shakespeare 's Romeo & Juliet wasn't enough to guarantee Leonardo's star status in Hollywood, he signed on as one of the stars of Marvin's Room. Based on the successful play by Scott McPherson, this film gave Leonardo a chance to work with Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton, and Robert De Niro.

In early 1996, Leonardo decided to do something he'd never done before. He accepted a role in a movie with a big budget and even bigger special effects. He agreed to join the cast of James Cameron's sweeping epic Titanic. With a budget that reached $200 million, the film is the most expensive ever made.

Leonardo was excited about being part of Titanic. He'd "never done anything like this before," he explains. "I never planned to do a movie like this, but I agreed to do it, and I'm glad I did. It was an amazing experience."

Once again he traveled to Mexico, where Titanic was shot. "We filmed some of it on Rosarito Beach," he says. "After living in Mexico for three months with Romeo & Juliet and six months with Titanic, I've spent nearly one year of my life there."

Titanic revolves around two young lovers, third-class passenger Jack Dawson (Leonardo) and first-class passenger Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), an aristocrat. Leonardo's riveting performance earned him rave reviews and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Dramatic Actor.
