From her bedroom on the third floor, Millie can see lots of things in her favourite tree: branches swaying in the wind, squirrels searching for pinecones, tiny black-eyed birds. One warm summer night Millie sees
something she's never seen before: a strange spot of pale bluish light. Millie tells her busy parents, who say it must be a star and send her back to bed. Millie knows it can't be a star. She shines her flashlight on it and
discovers a bug! Millie is determined that her parents share in the wonder of the fireflies. They resist at first, but soon the magic of the night and the sparkling lights entice them down to the lake where memories
of childhood fill their heads, and love for their daughter fills their hearts.
