British sociologists Williams and Bendelow, recent collaborators on Emotions in Social Life: Critical Themes and Contemporary Issues (Routledge, 1998), here reconsider the mind-body problem. Observing that "things are much more `messy' " than is suggested by the strict "dualistic legacies of the past," the authors suggest (unwisely?) that sociologists pay more attention to "the adult body in contemporary Western (i.e., European and North American) society." Chapters consider "bodily `order' " and "bodily `control,' " the " `libidinal' body" and the "emotionally `expressive' body."
