In this book, Stefan Hedlund and Kristian Gerner provide a riveting account of the self-destruction of the Soviet empire, examining the role of the Baltic states in this process of destruction. They discuss how the three Baltic republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania struggled successfully to gain their freedom, and how the policies pursued by Mikhail Gorbachev served to mobilize and politicize Baltic demands. Particular emphasis is placed on the unintended consequences that resulted from repeated interventions by Moscow. The authors develop a loose game theoretic framework for the examination of this critical struggle.

About the Author:
Stefan Hedlund is Professor of Soviet and East European Studies at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. He is the author of Private Agriculture in the Soviet Union (Routledge, 1989). Kristian Gerner is Associate Professor in East European Society and Culture at Lund University. Together, they are the co-authors of Ideology and Rationality in the Soviet Model (Routledge, 1989).
