The first trio of dogs, those who dream of earning big bones in their office jobs and with their cellular phones, are stout as fat cats and have remarkably porcine faces, and they march to the beat of the very same drummer. Some smiling dogs dine in restaurants where people are allowed only to look in, enviously, from the street. The weight of the dog who dreams of being the best, to say nothing of the heft of the medals on his chest, has swayed his horse's back. And how 'bout them Hounds, the rock group with punk hair? Flexible text, wiggling around on the page, often changing size and layout adds to the hijinks. Part of the sly wit at work in this book calls for readers to examine how much they themselves are bringing to the caricatures, but whatever degree of self-examination is applied, the upshot remains the same-this book is fun. PreSchool-Grade 2-Rhymed couplets describe the stuff of pups' dreams: "Some dogs dream of bones and such,/A cozy home,/A gentle touch." But others dream as humans do; they wish to be circus performers, astronauts, all sorts of things. The text is accompanied by bright cartoons rendered in oils "with the occasional dog hair mixed in." They show canines eating in restaurants with their people sadly waiting outside, a pooch campaigning for president, a cowdog rounding up cattle, etc. Boldly colored pages, each featuring a couplet on one side and a framed picture on the other, make all of this lots of fun. Sporadic sly references appear throughout, e.g., a sign with "HOLLYWOOF" on a hill, a campaign sign saying "PAW POWER," and a lamp base shaped like a bone. Although the book offers nothing startling in concept or execution, the text reads aloud well and the humorous illustrations will attract young readers.
