A wolf who wants to play his horn alone in the woods is joined by one noisy animal after another

From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2-- In the moonlight, Wolf enters a clearing in the woods to play his horn. But before he can begin, one animal after another arrives squeaking or screeching, pounding, blowing , or squeezing various instruments. At last, Wolf blasts his horn, halting the cacophony. He then conducts the impromptu band, until one by one the animals exit, leaving Wolf alone to play his tune. The short, cumulative text, vigorous and rhythmic, is good for reading aloud. The full-color spreads, executed in pastel, colored pencil, and watercolor, are humorous, energetic, and large enough for group sharing. The composition of the pages matches the cumulative text, as musicians crowd into the clearing, but because the shapes are large and well defined and the text always appropriately placed, the effect is not cluttered. The anthropomorphized creatures are rather stylized with similar features and expressions. The pencil work and colors create a moonlit effect. Other stories involving music, e.g., Ets's In the Forest (Puffin, 1976) and Behn's What a Beautiful Noise (World, 1970; o.p.) are always popular; this will be a spirited addition. --Cynthia K. From Publishers Weekly:
All wolf wants to do is play his horn--alone. But one moonlit night when he tries to do just this, his solo is interrupted by a parade of forest animals eager to join in the fun--rabbits squeaking off-key, a fox with a squeezebox, a moose on a tuba--until finally, chaos reigns. Interrupting the cacophony with a blast of his horn, the long-suffering wolf manages to unite the group for a quick jam session. After the others bow out one by one, wolf finally gets his chance for a nocturnal solo. Catalano's poetic, cumulative text has a graceful flow that makes it a sweet, though unexceptional, read-aloud. Preschoolers will enjoy the amiable animals featured in the earth-toned colored-pencil illustrations. Ages 4-up.
