From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6 A sequel to The Baron Rides Out (Philomel, 1985), which introduced the fabulous Baron Munchausen, a British folk character based on a real German gentleman. In this witty picture book, the Baron goes into the mouth of a volcano and through the center of the earth into the great Southern Ocean. There he is picked up by a Dutch ship which, blown by a gale at ``ninety miles an hour for six months,'' sails into a bay of fresh, creamy milk to land on the Island of Cheese. The book is clever, written in the clipped style typical of British humor. Benson's ink and watercolor illustrations are marvelousbeautifully detailed drawings that are as enjoyable to study as the text is to read. The literary and mythical allusions, as well as some of the more sophisticated humor, may be beyond the cognitive understanding of most children, and older children may be put off by the picture book format. Yet this book would be a good extension of the folklore area, and, properly presented, would be of both literary and artistic value to children. Constance A. Mellon, Department of Library and Information Studies, East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C.
