From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-4 A straightforward narrative about Noah and the flood that follows the Genesis chronology from God's condemnation of human wickedness to his rainbow promise never to destroy the world with water again. Using tradi tional stories that have developed about Noah through the centuries, Fus senegger expands the Bible account with descriptions of how Noah's neigh bors ridiculed his ark building, how the animals arrived on their own to board the ship, how tensions developed dur ing the voyage. The book's tone is rem iniscent of Max Bolliger's Noah and the Rainbow (Crowell, 1972; o.p.) . The emphasis is on the sinfulness of man kind and the complete destruction of humans. This aspect of the text is rein forced by the illustrations, including one in which a terrified man clings to a tree. Below him one set of arms and another set of legs are all that can be seen of drowning victims in the churn ing waters. The full-color paintings have a flattened perspective and dark hues. Clothing styles and the use of ico nography such as a hand to represent God give the illustrations a medieval quality. Because of the lengthy text and somewhat somber tone, the book's au dience will be older than the preschool ers who enjoy the versions of Noah by Charles Mee (Harper, 1978; o.p.), Law rence Lorimer (Random, 1978; o.p.), Peter Spier (Doubleday, 1977), and oth ers. Kathy Piehl, Mankato State Uni versity, Minn.
