Irish author O'Flaherty is probably best known to Americans for his numerous successful short stories and for the novel, The Informer , on which an Academy Award-winning film was based. The Wilderness is a novel-length fiction, originally published in serial form in "The Humanist" in 1927. O'Flaherty here attempts to deal with early themes of death and the individual conscience. Unfortunately, the work is uneven; the characters, primarily Irish "peasants," remain undeveloped and emblematic. O'Flaherty himself considered the work to be unfinished. The Wilderness is an interesting but minor work by this prolific author and as such would be of interest only to the close student of the man and the period. Ann C.
