From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-5 Dozens of tidbits of information about the behavior and physiology of squirrels, such as how squirrels find the nuts they bury and that their eyes bug out when they're alarmed can be found in the Grahams' book. Intended as a guide for observers rather than as a comprehensive study, this first-person plural narrative concentrates on gray squirrels in a park setting, beginning in the fall and following them through the year. Facts about habits and physical features are skillfully interwoven with vignettes of daily life. Detailed pencil illustrations bring the squirrels to life. Two-page spreads illustrate activities and surroundings, while smaller sketches highlight anatomical features. The Grahams have effectively combined factual accuracy with entertaining reading; they leave one with a fascination with nature. The book is not as comprehensive as Tree Squirrels (Dodd, 1983) by Colleen Stanley Bare or Jana McConoughey's The Squirrels (Crestwood, 1983), but its emphasis on observation is an unusual angle. Good for nature-study groups, or where additional material is needed. Lucy Young Clem, Evansville-Vanderburgh County Public Library, Ind.
