This volume collects articles from the military history magazine MHQ , many of them battle narratives, but some on more abstract topics as well. One of the most interesting articles concerns the effect of America's unconditional surrender policy on the conduct of World War II, another explores lore surrounding the Amazons, mythical female warriors. The editor has done a good job of representing warfare from all historical periods and geographic areas. Most articles read very well (many contributors have written popular books of their own) and will appeal at least to the general reader who enjoys military topics. For all these merits, the book may not find a comfortable niche in all libraries. It seems a trifle fat for pleasure reading, particularly within the confines of a checkout period, and its usefulness for research is limited. A possibility for undergraduate and large public libraries, particularly those serving considerable populations of military retirees or base personnel.
