Sixteen never-before-published humorous short stories written by award-winning children's authors, including Marion Dane Bauer, Walter Dean Myers, Joel Schwartz, Zilpha Keatley Snyder and Gary Soto.
"The quality of writing, the variety of the selections, and the appeal of the comedy make this a fine choice for introducing readers to good writers they haven't tried yet."--Booklist.
Grade 5-8-- As Gale observes in his introduction, ``. . . truly funny writing is often hard to find.'' Some of the stories in this volume are humorous, but none are ``truly funny.'' All are by well-known authors for children and young adults, and the situations in which their characters find themselves are familiar. The narrator in Susan Haven's ``Thanksgiving in Polynesia'' tries to cope with intrusive relatives and finds that the rest of her family is equally strung out. Johanna Hurwitz's Lucas Cott finds himself the unwitting agent in increasing the bunny population in his school. Timmie, ``The Best Dog in the World,'' who terrorizes girls at a sleepover, comes directly out of Carol Snyder's memories of her own dog. The authors' afterwords are illuminating and may encourage readers to seek more by these writers. Despite its sometimes tepid quality, Funny You Should Ask still presents situations that are at once universal, ridiculous, and slapstick enough to engage interest. While not a collection of outstanding literary merit, this is ideal as a classroom ``sponge'' to take up a few odd minutes here or there. It could also, by its use of themes from life, encourage students to try their own hands at writing. --Ann Welton, Thomas Academy, Kent, WA
