"Story of Mercy from age 5, to age 17: her home, school, and social life, and the many characters she encounters while trying to grow up. The novel is very down to earth, and Mercy (although born in the early 1900's) has a personality easily related to. When she wonders about God, she remarks that he is probably embarrassed, and that he has a heck of a nerve demanding that everyone worship him while praying to him obviously does no good at all, because he will do what he decides is best for you anyway (wars, etc.). She is not impressed by a religion that doesn't work for her, or for many people that she knows who only pretend to believe anyway."
