Set against a background of the rise of European fascism and World War II, this is the story of an orphan girl who goes to live in Oxfordshire with her uncle's eccentric family. The author has also written "Magnolia Gardens" and "Hang-ups", "Cash" and "Sexy" under the pseudonym of Candy Barr.

From Library Journal:
At the age of eight, Kitty Conway comes to live with her six Winstanley cousins and spends the next 16 years trying to become one of the group. Closest in age to Frannie, Kitty admires pretty, older Lexy and falls in love with the insouciant Jack. The four attend the 1936 Olympics and are introduced to Nazism in Berlin. Then Lexy falls in love with a German and elopes. When war comes, Kitty is visiting them and helps with their resistance efforts before escaping to England. She follows Jack to France to search for Fran, who has married a Jew and disappeared in Paris. Kitty's efforts to locate and return the scattered cousins to the family home result in her feeling complete acceptance at last. A different and enjoyable novel, this uses coincidence to advance the story too often but has some good characters. Recommended.

From Publishers Weekly:
Orphaned English narrator Kitty Conway lives happily with her uncle's family until events in Europe inspire her to risk her life to save victims of the Third Reich. "An old-fashioned, fully dimensional novel about people who change and grow in the chaotic 1930s and '40s," reported PW.

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. With unclipped dust jacket, very light creasing to head of spine otherwise fine. No inscription very clean throughout. When Kitty Conway is orphaned at the age of eight, she is sent to live with her uncle, Sir Ernest Winstanley, Bart. whose family lives in a state f eccentric chaos in the Oxfordshire countryside. As she is gradually sucked into their idyllic and highly individual childhood world, she shares her cousins belief that the duality of good and evil is as simple as black and white. But as the clouds of fascism gather over Europe and the innocence of childhood begin to fade, the first stirrings of dissent begin to divide the Winstanley family. The novel follows the Winstanley family through the decadent thirties of pre war Berlin, through occupied Paris and to the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps. Seller Inventory # 000454
