Adrienne Beauvisage has a knack for getting herself into difficult situations. The latest involves her employer, Walter Frakes-Hogg. Adrienne scorns his repeated advances, then is forced to flee his house, and he promises to seek revenge. Adrienne accepts a position as companion to Lady Thomasina Harms at her home, Harms Castle. When her father realizes she has no intention of leaving England with him and that she may be in danger, he asks an old friend of his to act as Adrienne's protector for a few months until she turns twenty-one. Adrienne doesn't like this plan, but she knows she has no choice if she wants to continue to have her independence. Nathan Raveneau is a sea captain with the reputation for being a rake. When his friend Nicholai Beauvisage offers to exchange his fifty acres of land on Barbados for his services as Adrienne's protector, Nathan cannot say no. With the additional land to add to his own, Nathan will be able to keep an eye on a neighbor he suspects of criminal activities. Yet, there is something about Nathan that makes her heart beat faster. When Nathan proves that she is in more danger than she realizes, Adrienne has no choice but to trust him. With Walter Frakes-Hogg determined to harm her and Lady Thomasina's untrustworthy son Huntsford trying to woo her, Nathan has his work cut out for him. He finds himself attracted to the impetuous and beautiful Adrienne-- and ready to break his promise to her father so he can have her for himself.
