He was alone when he first argued for a referendum over Britain remaining in the Common Market, but within five years a referendum had become national policy, and Benn had achieved his second constitutional change. About the Author:
Jad Adams is a historian, writer and broadcaster. His books include Hideous Absinthe: History of the Devil in a Bottle (2004) and biographies of Gandhi, Rudyard Kipling, Emmeline Pankhurst, and the Nehru dynasty.
